How to Prioritize Your Actions In a Wilderness Survival Situation: Survival scenarios can take many forms and each situation can look very different. That's probably why you don' t typically see alot of people saying "If you do X, Y and Z you will get home safe." There is no one size fits all answer to the exact individual steps that a person should take to get rescued. Because every scenario is situationally dependent and the bottomline line is you might not get home safe. When I taught wilderness survival at the USAF Survival Evasion Resistance and Escape School at Fairchild AFB, WA the most common answer to students questions was "It all depends". Even though your ability to survive does all depend on your environment, availble resources, personal knowledge and the overall situation. There are some overriding principles and some basic needs that should be considered in order to help you make the right deicsions so you can get home safe.

There are five basic needs that every person in a survival situation should address that are key to keeping you alive and getting youhome safe. In no particular order they are:

Personal Protection ( maintaining a 98.6 core body temperature )

Sustenance ( water and food )

Health ( first aid )

Travel ( walking out / navigation )

Communication (signaling for rescue )

Every one of the five basic needs could be more important than the other depending on the time or circumstances. But all will play a role in your ultimate recovery. I have developed the following list which incorporates the five basic needs to assist you in knowing what to do and in what order. I have used the mnemonic "I AM POSITIVE" which will hopefully help you to commit these actions to memory. Also having a positive mindset is likely the most important intangible thing a person needs to have to survive, so the two things work together well. Here is a quick look at all of the items I cover more in depth in my short new ebook that you can download ( without any registration or email entry- just click and it will download a .pdf file ) for FREE on my website www.RealitySurvival.Com

I = IMMEDIATE ACTIONS

A = ASSESS THE SITUATION

M = MEDICAL

P= PERSONAL PROTECTION

O = ORIENT YOURSELF

S = SUSTENANCE

I = IMPROVISE A SIGNAL

T = TRAVEL DETERMINATION

I = INVENTORY SUPPLIES

V = VECTOR TO CIVILIZATION

E = EVALUATE PROGRESS

The entire ebook is only 15 pages (w/pictures) so it is a very short and too the point no nonsense look at the I AM POSITIVE system for prioritizing your actions in a wilderness survival situation. The ebook also contains a quick reference card, that you can cut out and laminate and place in your PSK or wallet, so you will always have it, just in case you forget one of the steps.
